Ten: The Problem of Time

10 – The Problem of Time

“Roderich, are you done dressing up yet?” Elizabeta fixated her eyes towards her fiancé’s room, a small smile curving up her lips as she waited for her beloved. She leaned against the wall of their home, arms folded over her chest and patiently tapping her foot on the ground. An exasperated voice came from the room, but it seemed to be too muffled by the shirt she felt he was sliding on. “Ludwig is waiting, and we don’t want to test his patience, dear.”

“He waits if he has to wait.” Roderich stepped out, grumbling. His fitted white shirt seemed the slightest bit wrinkled, and Elizabeta tsked in disapproval at the sight. She smoothed it down in hopes of removing the wrinkles, but only half of them seemed to fade away. “I think I should go change.”

“No, don’t. That’s already alright enough.” She gave the man a light smile. “I like it.” Despite his current emotion, he couldn’t help but feel adoration for her. She moved closer to him, wrapping her arms around him affectionately, and the musician did the same to her. They stayed in that position for a few minutes until they pulled away, he lacing his fingers into hers. He squeezed lightly.

“Let’s go. It’s going to be quite a walk, unless you want to go by horse.”

“Ride Vienna.” He looked at her. “We have quite an evening set up.” The man rolled his eyes but complied, taking her out of their house and to their white mare, which was patiently waiting for her owner. Soon, they were riding to the castle, her arms wrapped around his waist. Elizabeta watched Roderich silently, looking over the features of his face, her thoughts scattering amongst the wind.

He was a musician in the Kingdom, as well as a Knight, slightly lower ranked than Gilbert was. Roderich Edelstein was one who took pride in his talents, and he was quite well known for his expertise. He would sometimes travel to the different Kingdoms to play, Elizabeta occasionally joining if she were free.

She could remember when they first met, a merry spring five years back. She smiled at the memory.

Nine: Metamorphasis

09 – Metamorphosis

Francis sighed, only managing a wry smile as his hand toyed with the rim of his wine glass. His blue eyes merely gazed out of the window, watching as Ludwig and Gilbert galloped out of the Spades Kingdom on their horses, determined to make it back to their own as soon as possible. He wished to speak with the silver-haired knight, but after seeing how hurried the twosome were, decided that it could wait until next time. He faced Arthur, lifting a blonde brow, a signal that he desired for the man across him to start speaking. “Well?” he shifted a bit on the seat. “What is it you wish to speak to me about? If it’s something personal, perhaps we should talk about it next time.”

Arthur cleared his throat, not bothering to think of the smallest insult to throw at the man.

“It’s something that has to do with our own Kingdoms…Francis.” The name left a bitter taste in his mouth. “Something I must tell immediately.”

Eight: That Fighting Spirit

08 – That Fighting Spirit

The lady in front of the Joker stood up, wiping the dirt off her outfit. Antonio rushed over to her with a dagger in his hand, pointing it at the Joker, his hand trembling only slightly as his green eyes looked over the said man. “Jasmine, get away from here and leave me to deal with this,” he said lowly to her. The woman scoffed, raising the rake she had dropped beforehand. “I’m serious; it’s dangerous to be in front of such a creature.”

“I’m not a weakling, Antonio.” She replied, meeting the Joker’s obsidian eyes. Averting her attention to the person, she asked, “What are you doing here in Tréboles?” the creature merely gave Jasmine a half-smile, brushing his blonde hair out of his eyes.

“I’m looking for that Spade jerk of jerks. Looks like I’ve wandered into the wrong area.”

Seven: Gathering Together

07 – Gathering Together

Tricia had no idea why Reese seemed stony, and why Francis had a few bruises on him. So when Matthew asked her about it, she merely shrugged and blinked, confused as well like the half-brother of Alfred, who was teasing Francis about his injuries. Scooping up a piece of toast, she picked her knife and spread butter on it, listening on eagerly at the King of Diamonds and Knight of Spades interact that morning.

“She knows how to aim, and aim well.” Francis remarked, sending Reese a coy smirk. Said woman merely glared at him with flushed cheeks, crossing her arms and looking away. Alfred made a disgusted face, preparing to strike Francis with a nearby paper, which looked totally harmless. “Mademoiselle Reese is fit for the battlefield.”

“Make any more remarks about me, and I’ll give you what you deserve.” She spat. Francis acted like he didn’t hear.

“Feisty, aren’t you? I like that.”

Six: Misunderstood

06 – Misunderstood

The meeting among Kings proved to be useless, and Arthur Kirkland suffered enough for it. His head pounded, ached. As usual, Ludwig was his brash self, Antonio was a ditz, and Francis was just being the irritating Francis he always was. As for himself, he was just trying to get everyone to agree and accept the fact that they didn’t have a bloody Queen yet, and that was the harsh truth.

None of them wanted a sneering Ivan Braginski sending them out of the castle with no time to pack. As much as Arthur wanted to retain his position as King, he wasn’t as heartless as to actually dare to sabotage the other King’s attempts. No. He had no such say when it came to that. Now, he just wished that Francis would stop poking his nose into his own business and instead rule over Diamants well enough to get him saved from being the one to leave the castle.

The Royal Flush, he thought, was actually useless. He heard of kings from far away only being replaced upon their death. Arthur grits his teeth in chagrin, quite envious that things were much simpler in far away areas. There was nothing he could do, though. He was the King of Spades, and not some other king in some other land, doing God-knows-what.

List of Arcs

Hello and good evening! It is I, the author who updates slowly yet makes sure to get the story done. Backtracking a bit on Royal Flush, there are different "arcs" to the story that progress from one to another. As seen in the new Navigation page I made, the first arc is entitled The Fall. You may wonder - what the hell is this about? Well ladies and gents, I've decided to post the names of the arcs and the fonts I've been using for those arcs just to give a little tease on what the entirety of the story will be composed of.
Without further ado, here are the arc names and their respective fonts.

1-10: The Fall
Font: Vivladi

11-15: Temptation
Font: Fely

16-20: Preparation
Font: Dear Joe

21-23: Revelation
Font: Jane Austen

24: Royal Flush
Font: Sverige Script

25-28: Prelude to the End
Font: Dawning of a New Day

29-30: Goodbye
Font: Freedom Script

Note, to actually see these fonts in action you need to install said fonts into your computer first before viewing this post. I've noticed that with blogspot.

Five: A Crow's Caw

05 – A Crow’s Caw

“Gentlemen, we have yet to solve a small issue regarding all four of us.”

“Oh? What is it, Arthur?”

The blonde man sighed, raking his fingers through his hair.

“The Royal Flush.”

At the three words, the other three kings fell silent. Ludwig frowned, rubbing his temples at a leisurely pace. Antonio blinked, looking quite concerned. Francis was only able to sigh, murmuring something under his breath.

“I don’t know what Ivan is planning. Frankly, who does? Though we may be rivals in Kingdoms and such, I do not want to have an unfair balance of the system.” He continued sharply. “All of us require Queens. If we lack by the time Ivan gets here, we’ll immediately be swept out of the castle and Royal System, as well as the Knights.”

“Lovino will bombard me with anger if he’s reelected,” sighed Antonio deeply. “I don’t want that, or as Arthur had said, an unfair tip on the scale.”

Four: Knight + King

04 – Knight + King

“So you’re saying…” began Arthur slowly, “Tricia here pushed you into the tree hole, and then the other three chased you down here?” Elly nodded, and Arthur frowned a little, fiddling with his porcelain tea cup. “How odd. I’ve never heard of tree holes leading to other places.”

“Neither have we,” sighed Rianne, taking another drink from her tea cup. “We don’t know how to get back to our place, and we don’t even know much about…Cardverse.” The King pursed his lips, crossing his ankles under the table. “We don’t know how long it’s been since we’ve been disconnected from our own world.”

“Plus,” added Reese, “We also don’t know if the flow of time here in Cardverse is different from our own. For all we know, days could have already passed, and our own families are looking for the four of us.” Arthur thought about that, now playing with the silver spoon in hand.

Announcement

Hello loves!
Royal Flush hasn't been updated recently.

This is just a reminder that it is NOT going on hiatus.
I'm already up to 10 or so chapters.
And every time I complete one, I post one on here.

The next chapter is a little iffy.
But I promise to get it on here soon.

Thank you and have an excellent day.

Three: Tea and Spades

03 – Tea and Spades

A haughty laugh filled the air.

“Save these lassies today, Knight,” sneered Joker, who started to pluck leaves off the branches of the tree. “But you’ll never know which direction they’ll end up in.” Alfred made a small noise, pointing the sword at the other man.

“Never with your lot, I’m sure.” He muttered. “Now, get away!” Joker made a face and waved at the girls with a lopsided grin, and then went off, hopping away into the dark forest. Once he was gone, the Knight turned to the four, putting his sword back in its case. “Now, I want you to explain yourselves.”

Elly glanced at Rianne, who just gave her a look.

Minutes passed as Elly explained to Alfred how they got there. When she finished, Alfred could only blink and ask her one question – do you really expect me to believe that?

Two: Welcome to Cardverse

02 – Welcome to Cardverse

“Your Highness.”

Scarlet eyes meet a calm blue, the latter belonging to a tall, sturdy man sitting on a throne. He looks down at the other, and allows a small smile to curve his lips. The crown on his head was golden, encrusted with heart-shaped gems varying in shades of red. He wears a deep maroon cloak, black pants peeking out from the bottom. The shoes on his feet are the same shade as his cloak, with black shoelaces tying it up.

“My Knight.”

One: Of Kings and Queens

01 – Of Kings and Queens

The violet eyes scan the perimeter, arms crossed over his chest. His black top revealed a sculpt chest, his dark pants reaching his ankles. The youth was barefooted as well, feet planted on the rich soil. In his right hand lay four cards, worn out from time.

“The rats of Cardverse,” he spat, lips curving up in a cruel sneer. “…and their pitiful kingdoms.” The deep voice held malice, the intention to harm. It did not match the seemingly kind shade of mauve in his eyes. His left hand moved quickly, throwing each of the four cards down to the ground as he mentioned a name for each.

“Ludwig Beilschmidt, King of Herzen.
Arthur Kirkland, King of Spades.
Francis Bonnefoy, King of Diamants.
Antonio Carriedo, King of Tréboles.”

Brandishing a sword from his hilt, he played with the blade for a moment before stabbing each of the cards in the center with twisted glee. Platinum-colored hair shone in the soft moonlight radiating on the hilltop overlooking the vast land.

“Swine of Cardverse,” he said to himself, “scum of Kings.” He focused his eyes on the moon, digging deep into the fallen cards without any notice. “Bring to me those four missing queens.” A malicious grin played on his lips at the thought.

“I’ll have them all.”

* * * * * *

“Elly!” a young brunette of the age eleven looked up, a few loose strands of hair falling into her face. In front of her stood a taller girl with wavy black hair that reached her shoulders, grinning widely and holding something in her hands. Elly couldn’t make out what it was at the moment. “Elly, come and play with us!”

“What’s taken?”

The other scrunched up her face in deep thought. “Um…oh, Hearts went to Rianne. Diamonds went to Reese. I claimed the Clovers.” Her voice rose in pitch at the word Clovers, “which means that you end up with…”

“I end up with Spades.” Elly ended. The girl nodded. “Of all things to pick…why the Clovers, Tricia?” Tricia merely shrugged, twirling what was seen to be a four-leaved clover in her fingers.

“Hearts are too mushy and Diamonds are overrated.” She replied. The brunette rolled her eyes, crossing her arms over her chest. “Plus, Spades aren’t my type.”

“Which left you with the Clover,” she said dryly. Tricia smirked.

“You’re just jealous.”

“Jealous of a stupid Clover thing, sure.” When she said that, two girls ran over to them. One had long, chestnut shaded hair with red eyes. The other one had long black hair and green eyes. The one with green eyes bore a drawing of a heart on her right forearm. “Rianne – really – you picked Hearts?”

She blushed.

“I got the first choice,” she mumbled. The other girl made a small noise. “Reese made me do it.” The one named Reese merely shrugged.

“I don’t get it. Why are we Queens?” immediately, Tricia defended the idea.

“Queens are awesome, okay? They don’t do anything in the fairytales I read,” Reese muttered something about an eleven-year-old girl still reading those types of stories, “and I want to change that! So does Rianne,” Tricia added.

Elly had the bad feeling the green-eyed girl was forced.

“I made Reese give in to the idea, and all we need is your consent?”

“Eh…? Why my consent, Tricia?”

“Because the last time we did something without everyone’s consent,” Tricia shot Reese a small look. “Someone ended up with a burn on her arm and another ended up with a sprain.” Reese’s eye twitched.

“That was an accident!” she growled.

“Accident, yeah right!”

“You’re just clumsy!”

“Excuse me, you have no common sense!”

Elly groaned. This always happened between the energetic Tricia and the rule-abiding Reese, who argued over the most trivial things ever. Rianne gave her a sorry look and sat down next to her on the wooden bench, hands folded over her lap like a proper lady. Elly wasn’t sure if it was her ladylike behavior, or how her family raised her. Either one seemed very likely at the moment.

Queens,” Rianne mused.

“Yes. Queens.” She shuffled for something in her skirt pocket, and pulled out a slim blue stick, almost six inches in length. Elly blinked. “What’s this for?”

“I have no idea,” Rianne handed the stick over to Elly, who just stared at it with a neutral expression on her face. “I just found it nearby.” After saying this, she took three more out of her pocket, which differed in color but stayed the same in terms of length. “Tricia said the sticks were…” she struggled for a word. “…swords.”

“And I have the blue one because…?”

“Red is for Hearts. Green is for Clovers. Yellow for the Diamonds. Blue for Spades.” Elly repeated the sentence in her head. It seemed to make sense. Though she knew Rianne preferred green and Tricia yellow, they had to at least stick with the logical and somewhat realistic color assigning.

There was no scientific basis for that, Reese would argue.

It felt right, Tricia would snap right back.

Yes, that felt right.

* * * * *

Now, Elly la Cruz is seventeen-years-old, with her still brown hair reaching her elbows. She no longer adores the color pink but blue and orange; though still has the same three friends by her side. Silently, she replays the memory in her head. So many changes had gone by in the last six years, not only for her, but for all of them.

Strict and foreboding Reese la Paz was not so strict anymore, but preferred sticking to the scientific basis of life and all of that. Over the years, she had gotten braces and later changed to retainers, and recently had them off a week ago. Her hair was still the same color, but now reached her shoulders.

The enthusiastic Tricia Amor remained the same, only increasing in energy. She had tanned over the years and preferred it to the fair-skinned color she saw everywhere, and gained a massive growth spurt in sixth grade, now reaching five feet, nine inches. Having rarely cut her hair, it now reached her middle back.

On the other hand, shy Rianne Naven has grown out of that shell but later proves to be the shortest of the four. She gained a love for music at seventh grade, and now aspired to be a pianist. Her black hair merely grazed her thighs at this point, but she wanted to have it cut to her middle back like Tricia.

In the memory, they were in Rianne’s backyard.

In the present, they were in the very same place.

“Hey, hey, do you remember that game we used to play as kids?” Tricia asked, munching on a slice of watermelon. The summer heat, for once, took over the usually pouring Manchester. “The one with the cards and stuff…” she gulped down the fruit, soon taking another bite. Rianne nodded.

“Hearts, Spades, Diamonds, and Clovers?”

“Yeah, that!” Tricia put down the watermelon on a clean plate. “God that was fun. Reese hated being a Queen,” she snorted. “But we all forced her into it, eh, Reese?” from behind, Reese merely nodded. “…hey, do we still have those sticks Rianne found?”

“Mine’s at home,” Reese said wearily. Elly nodded.

Tricia made a noise that sounded like a sigh. “Darn. I did, too.” Her eyes lingered onto a tree, and she blinked. “Oi, Rianne, how long has that tree been there?” she pointed to the large oak tree nearby, and Rianne merely thought for a few seconds.

“It was already there when I was born.” Tricia stands up, dragging Elly with her. The latter demands to know what she’s doing, and Tricia just laughs.

“Check it, Elly! Maybe there’s some rabbit down there with a golden watch, running to the bloody Wonderland.”

“I am over that phase, thank you very much!” she protests. Tricia makes her look inside the tree (there was a hole in the middle), still laughing.

“Oh, come on!” she replies cheerfully, not noticing her moving hand. “Just a peek!”

A slip of the hand.

Elly falls inside with a yell. Rianne and Reese rise to their feet quickly, the former spluttering and the latter starting to scold Tricia, whose eyes widened as she stared at the tree in major disbelief.

“Tricia Amor, you idiot!”

“H-Hold on,” she stammers, “Elly is just inside, right? ELLY!” she then yells, peeking in. “Are you in there or something? I’ll pull you out, just answer already!”

There was no reply.

Rianne panicked.

“Tricia, get her out of there!”

“I’m trying! My hand can’t reach hers – oi, Elly, get out of there already!” huffing, Tricia got her head out of the tree and pushed the sleeves of her shirt back, rolling up her pants as well. “Tsk – I’m getting inside that thing.”

“You might squish her,” growled Reese.

“Don’t care, if I don’t come back in five, get someone to get us out!” as soon as those words were uttered, Tricia leapt in. Reese gave Rianne a stern look.

“We have to get your parents.”

“They’re not here! They left us for the day, remember?” Reese cussed.

“Get your phone out, then!”

“It’s upstairs – oh bugger, screw this.” Rianne climbed into the tree without thinking. Before Reese could react, her friend fell down, just like Elly and Tricia.

“…oh hell, I’m going to regret this, aren’t I.”

The Plot

They didn't expect to land in such a place.
Four girls with little knowledge of this other world stumble into Cardverse, unsure of where to go and how to act. Luckily, the King of Spades decides to accommodate them for the time being...however, with the presence of other Kings and other Kingdoms in the land, it's quite hard to ignore the temptation of venturing elsewhere.
Herzen, Spades, Diamants, and Treboles. What's so peculiar about these places?
Moreover, what is this Royal Flush the royalties put so much attention on?
From behind, a crow looks on.

Central Characters

Marianne Naven:
The shortest of the foursome. She has green eyes and black hair, and is normally a thoughtful girl. However, she has a nasty temper. If anyone were to get on her bad side, they would have to watch out. Later in the story, Marianne would be the rumored Queen of Herzen.
Elisa la Cruz:
A determined young lady with brown hair and blue eyes. Though lightly stubborn throughout, she has a kind heart. Out of the four, she has the most expertise in cooking. In the story, she is rumored to be the fated Queen of Spades.
Reese la Paz:
Reese doubts the existence of Cardverse, and wants to get back to her home as soon as possible. Her dark brown hair and red eyes make her a standout. She is the logic of the group, though has weak convictions. The rumored Queen of Diamants.
Tricia Amor:
The most laid-back of the four who likes Cardverse the most. She is interested in the different kingdoms, trying to convince the others that the place isn't so bad. The rumored Queen of Treboles has black hair and yellow eyes.
